You'll never want to learn to cook if you try these crappy recipes first. I actually would rather give this only 1/2 a star but there isn't that option. If memory serves, this was one of three cook books that we had in my home growing up. The edition that we had was much larger and had a hardcover. I decided to only rate it 3.5 peaches because of these flaws, and for the basic recipes within, with a whole peach devoted to its nostalgia and staying power.
Perfect for today's kitchens, the book is a handy, lay-flat hardcover. The 17th edition of Better Homes & Gardens New Cook Book hit bookstore shelves September 18, 2018. The book is great, though l find the coating on the outside of the book unpleasant, but that's just a personal observation.

The recipes are tried-and-true "American Food" and if you make one for a potluck it will get eaten. Especially "Black Beans and Corn with Salsa Dressing." For what it's worth, I cook with as little salt as I can get away with, but when you don't put any salt at all into a pie crust - eww. There are times, however, that I'm confused as to how nostalgia can push through the fullness of time with such a golden sheen.

Great pictures, lots of info and good recipes. The book came with a label saying a magazine subscription for Better Homes and Gardens was included with the purchase of the book. I filled out and sent in the card enclosed, but so far no magazine has arrived...disappointed..but book is really nicely set up and worth the money. But, not unlike that big old book, this one sat idle for many years.

Strain broth through large sieve or colander lined with 2 layers of cheesecloth. Stir in meat, corn, tomatoes, potatoes, beans, carrots, celery, onion and garlic. Cover and simmer about 30 minutes or until vegetables are crisp-tender. My suggestion is to search Goodwill or second-hand book stores for one of those earlier editions.
